What are the skills a child SHOULD be learning in school

Why do we send our children off to school? So that we can see them evolving into beautiful and independent adults. And while academics are extremely important and necessary, it is not everything. And while schools are great for this, all of them share one flaw: They are depriving children of learning basic skills!

I mean it’s great that you’re getting educated, it does help put food on the table. But what about other necessities and skills which help children to survive in this world? Not only in their youth but also as adults. I’ll be talking about what skills a child SHOULD be learning in school.

For starters, and I think we all agree on this, children should be taught on how to be socially active and confident. Educators have failed miserably in this area. We often see children shying away from public speaking. And that’s fine, they are children after all! But it’s the school’s and parent’s job to encourage them forward socially. Many children all over the world are being bullied, but they don’t know how to cope with it because they are neither aware nor do they possess the courage and confidence to stand up to their bullies. This area of skill is in dire need of attention!

1

Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, right? This is something which has been burned into our memory! Wouldn’t it be nice… to I don’t know learn about taxes, mortgages etc. in the same way that we were forced to learn about mitochondria? I mean, sure it’s nice, but it’s of no use to us, right?! It’s essential that the children are educated about these topics so that they understand the importance of it and hence, can function like good and responsible adults.

2

Basic cooking! It’s imperative that children know the basic know-how about cooking. God forbid, they can be faced with unusual circumstances when they are alone, or their parents or babysitters can’t attend to them, they should at least know how to put together a simple meal for themselves. We wouldn’t want them to starve right?

3

Another major skill children should be taught is to call the right authorities if something goes wrong. There should be enough sense instilled in them that they know what course of action to be taken in which situation. For example, alerting the fire department or calling the police depending on the situation. They should be taught how to act fast and their wits should be sharp!

4

Other skills include tackling different situations, compassion, tolerance etc. It is of utmost importance that schools include activities in which a child not only excels at academics but is also given an excellent platform for learning new skills and applying them in daily life situations, in and out of schools! Naturally, we can’t give children a career to prepare for, but we can integrate skills in them which will help them adapt to different situations. They will certainly thank us for a long time to come!

khoon ke ek ek qatrey ka intiqaam

it was a news i wish i never heard in my life….an incident that would never happen in my utopia of imagination. but its a real world, a world where monsters live disguised as humans and no one is safe. not even young innocent children.
i still cant believe that the sky didnt fall when 6 barbarians entered premises of a school, handpicked children to kill, told them to recite their kalma, fired at their legs first to make sure they suffer as much as possible before dying, shot them on their eyes and head and left them to die. approximately 150 of them.
its a scene right out of a horror movie …. oh i wish it was! because its not. it happened in peshawar in army public school. it actually happened more than 24 hours ago and i still cant believe somebody could actually be so cruel that they could plan and then execute this! they didnt stop even after seeing innocent faces, they didnt stop even after seeing their blood spilled on the floor.
they didnt stop and nearly 150 innocent angels died. they will never go back to their mothers. their mothers will never be able to make their favourite meals for them, will never be able to hug them, will never be able to kiss them goodbye in the morning before school….because they will never go to school again.
everyone was quick to condemn these attacks. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif went on to say we will avenge for each drop of blood spilled by the terrorists. it sounds good….but is it good enough to comfort the mothers of victims. No, absolutely not!
we, as a nation, need to understand we are all responsible for yesterday’s attacks.
why, you may ask.
Because we supported the jihad movement in the 70’s and 80’s spear headed by zia ul haq.
Because we let the afghani refugees in and never told them to go back.
Because we let those afghani refugees smuggle everything to and from afghanistan from drugs to weapons.
Because we were sympathetic towards Taliban during the 90’s. a large section of the society still is.
Because we thought musharaf was a traitor when he tried to get rid of these terrorists.
Because we actually toppled over musharaf’s government when he took action against these barbaric monsters.
Because we wanted to talk with lunatics who do not understand anything other than bombs and money.
Because we brought someone in power and making him prime minister who calls zia ul haq (the father of these problems) his mentor, by democratically electing him
Because we dont care how many children die as we have an ever imcreasing birth rate (311 children have died only in tharparker in the first 11 months of this year)

Free indoor playgrounds

These days i am very much interested in finding indoor activities for K and D. Singapore is very hot for most of the year and it rains a lot too so its important to find indoor activities. Also, its very expensive so these days i am trying to find ‘free’ fun activities.

This week we went to two indoor playgrounds on orchard road (which is where our serviced apartment is): Paragon and 313.

Paragon: The playground is mainly targdted towards tots and is located inside the building on level 5. This means the children can enjoy playing for as long as they want without sweating much due to air con. There is a slide and some other fun activities free of cost. There are also some paid rides that kids can enjoy. My girls absolutely loved it. Also, if you are really tired, you can sit on  a bench while watching ur kids play.

313: This playground is partially indoors as it is located on the sky terrace on level 5. There is a roof on it so im sure it saves the children from rain and direct sunlight but it tends to get very hot. There are not too many activities here but it is a good option for those parents who might be planning to dine at the Food Republic.
