Best Beauty Trends in 2017

As 2017 has just ended, beauty geeks around the world are reflecting on all the trends that rocked our world this year. 2017 wasn’t the trendiest year when it comes to makeup and fashion that’s for sure. But there were a couple of them that deserve some recognition.

For desi people like you and I, we couldn’t really get into all of the fashion trends like buzz cuts and bleach blonds. But there were others that were seriously popular here probably more than anywhere else.

1. Adidas Superstar Sneakers
The plain white pair of sneakers were literally everywhere this year! At first I was surprised how everyone could afford high-end brand sneakers so easily. Well, not all the superstar sneakers you see people wearing around you are original Adidas. Tons of online shops and Facebook pages started offering these white sneakers at less than half the price!

2. Face Masks
I can’t be the only one who saw a friend on Snapchat wearing a charcoal mask at least once a week. These face masks were super popular this year especially the charcoal one. With all the hype around it, I don’t see the trend ending next year either!

3. Glitter Lipstick
Honestly, the glitter lipstick trend wasn’t that crazily followed by Pakistanis. It did, however, set new lip makeup standards across the globe. But with the glitter health controversy that sparked this year, this trend might see its demise as fast as choker necklaces did.

4. Poppin’ Highlighter
Highlighters were always a part of a complete makeup routine for many people but the obsession over aggressive highlighters has only just begun. With the Fenty Beauty line and Huda Beauty highlighters getting better and better, the shine on our cheekbones might get blinder and blinder.

5. K-Beauty
Korean Beauty, just like Korean Pop, was undeniably a showstopper this year. K-beauty completely revolutionized skincare and it keeps growing. I’m not complaining though – these products actually work like a miracle!

How to: Choosing the Perfect Photographer for your Wedding

A wedding day is the most memorable but challenging day in one’s life where couples want everything to be perfect. You will surely want to capture the soothing bond of togetherness on your wedding day to make your memories last till eternity. Therefore, finding the right photographer for your wedding is of crucial importance who must be capable of giving striking aesthetics to your wedding album.

Here we have compiled some key areas of consideration while choosing a photographer for your wedding.

1. A GLANCE AT PORTFOLIO OF DIFFERENT PHOTOGRAPHERS:
As you search for the finest photographers in the marketplace, do cast an eye on their portfolios as it will greatly help you to determine what type of photography you are really looking for your big day.

FB_IMG_1514310234249.jpg

Look for the following key features while demonstrating a portfolio:

STYLE: Determine the various styles of photographers they typically work in. The styles range from fine art photography to illustrative or photojournalistic photography. I personally recommend going for a professional Fine Art photography as it best suits our traditional weddings.

QUALITY OF THE PRINTS: Next, demonstrate the quality of the prints with an open eye as most probably they are going to use the same print quality for you.

LIGHTING & COMPOSITON: Pay special attention to the quality of lighting & composition in the pictures. It can either be dark, moody, bright or an infusion of natural light. Also, make sure 1the subjects are captured with their genuine emotions & not like those caught in headlights.

2. MEETING PHOTOGRAPHERS IN PERSON
After shortlisting your photographers’ list, now it’s the time to interview them in person & get to know about their personalities. For instance, if your chosen photographer turns out to be a short-tempered or rude, he/she can ruin your mood to a great extent for your special day. I strongly recommend you to listen to your gut feelings while judging a photographer, if he/she seems polite, cooperative & listen to you more than he speaks then surely it would be the best compatibility for both.

3. LOOK FOR PROFESSIONALISM & PRICING:
Lastly, look for more professionalism at an affordable price. An ideal photographer will shadow your every move & will capture the relaxed smile of your guests. Don’t forget to ask them about their standard rates & the discounts they offer.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOU DECISON!

Tutorial: Master the Skill of Applying Flawless Lipstick

Lipstick is the essence of our traditional & casual makeups; it is indeed an art that can easily be mastered through some techniques. If you are one of those struggling to cope up with a quick fading lipstick or a lipstick that dries your lips & sometimes even end up on your teeth, then here is a quick guide to master this art perfectly.

EXFOLIATE FOR A SENSATIONAL BLEND:

The first and foremost step is to prepare your lips to avoid any flakiness. Exfoliate your lips by using a soft & damp toothbrush. Do not forget to apply a lip balm that will ultimately help in producing a smoother lip texture. A lip primer may also be used for achieving a long-lasting hydration & color stay.

APPLYING A BASE:

If you want to get rid of an even lip tone, then use a base or concealer on your lips before applying any lipstick shades. Use a flat brush for applying compact powder to seal the base & bringing the true shades of lipsticks.

MAGIC OF A LIP LINER:

Majority of the women apply lipstick directly on their lips without using a lip liner. It not only results in quick fading but also results in broken edges of your lipstick. So, try to use a matching lip liner with your lipstick shades & carefully draw the outline to define your natural lip line.

FINALLY-IT’S YOUR LIPSTICK’S TURN:
Apply your lipstick by using a lip brush to cover the inner edges of your lips & intensify the color according to your needs. Now blend it precisely with your lip liner to give a perfect look. If you are using a matte lipstick, you can add some definitions like lip gloss to give a pouty look.

And while we are talking about lipsticks and their easy application, why not have a look at these lip glosses which are absolutely easy to apply 🙂

What it’s like to be a Foodie!

The importance of cooking was made clear to me in that one month which I had spent in a single room of an Army mess. I had never really considered cooking as an important act in my life. My mother cooked and when she was tired or needed help our trusted manservant of long would pitch in and his food, although not exceptionally good was passably bearable. On weekends, holidays and trips abroad we ate out, Mediterranean, seafood from around the world and pizza were the staple favorites of the family (it wasn’t easy to agree on a single restaurant since we were a large family).

Even while travelling we mostly stayed in furnished apartments to allow for the occasional ‘roti and salan’ craving to be easily fulfilled. My mother, may God keep that excellent woman in great health always made it seem so easy. Then I got married and moved in with my in-laws. My mother in law was a keen cook too and despite being a working lady her kitchen ran smoothly and staple homemade food kept my stomach satisfied.

Although there was a difference in taste and variety, my inner cook still lay sleeping and setting foot inside the kitchen was not something I did much often except for the occasional baking. Cakes and Pizza I can bake since I was in grade school and except for a few special dinners and an occasional soup I was not tempted to be in the kitchen.

Then there came that one month when I was stuck in a single room and even though the mess waiters lined up daily to receive orders for any menu on this side of the Kabul River, whatever they presented each evening tasted oddly alike and of nothing I could put my finger on. So, it was this oxygen food (tasteless and odorless) that made me start wishing for a place of my own which must include a kitchen. The moment my husband and I shifted into our first new house, I focused on setting up the kitchen first (which is one place in the house where a woman who cooks spends a good part of her life).

IMG_2369With the expert help of my mother I did go about this task and started this wonderful journey of self-discovery which is cooking. Cooking is the other side of the coin which spells Foodie!

I am the average woman, trying to run a house, bring up well behaved children and balance relationships all the while trying to make something of my life. Unlucky to have been born with absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I have been lucky to have life throw me a pretty amazing mix of everything and I have been learning on the job. I am an avid lover of nature, i love to read and write and occasionally paint. I’m blogging to share my personal experiences in case they prove to be of help to other thirty somethings and if not then be a source of amusement and humour. So do forgive me for my excesses in advance and comment to share your own take on my musings.

Mini Spa Day – At Home

I’m a working woman and after long, tiring week, I like to treat myself a little with beauty treatments and so I keep trying new products. But to say the least, I like instant results using easy techniques and any product that promises that, gets my instant attention.

A few days ago I randomly bought a face mask from a home based Pakistani online page named Food For Your Face by Fire fly.  I always have pain in the ass type products from online pages but I was willing to give this one a try just for the heck of it.

_20170410_105402

So I take 1 spoon full of that mask and mix it with chilled milk, mix it until it has a  creamy thick texture as indicated on the instructions leaflet. After applying it evenly on all over my face and neck (Beauty tip: don’t treat your neck like a garbage bin, it needs just as much attention as your face:)), I just relax and wait for it to dry. I really like the tingling effect it gives due to peppermint oil. Now once there is a thick dry layer of mask on my face, I first loosen it with my wet hands then wash it off with plain water. Later, I apply a moisturizer.

Now come to the results, my skin is so fresh and clean and all my room is scented with pepper mint aroma. Most of the time I am so busy that I don’t have time to go to salon so this is the best choice for me and for all lazy couch potatoes. After few applications I am noticing that my nose is mostly cleared up (my nose is otherwise filled with black and white heads).

So this is a Yayyyyy from me for this mask but that same product which someone love might not suit you so choose wisely and always perform a patch test.

Birthdays made easier :)

Please note this is NOT a paid/sponsored post.

So what do you do when you have two young kids, no culinary skills, no helper, laundry still screaming for attention and your little one has her birthday coming up! You start panicking?

Well, especially yes if you are living in singapore and are on a budget.

This year I decided to celebrate Duaa’s birthday on a budget beside the pool with a few friends of both kids and perhaps 2-3 of my close friends. I wanted something very casual but the cake has to be the most important thing in a birthday party no matter how extravagant or casual the party is. The lady who I have been turning to for the past two years for all our ‘cake’ needs was travelling and that’s when I found out that a friend, Ruqaiya has recently launched her business too. The best thing about her is that she can do all sorts of desserts and you are not limited to cakes only. The next problem was I had only seen pics of her cakes, who did look pretty but I had no idea how they tasted. So, I just trusted her blindly. Or let’s say not exactly blindly because I had already tasted some stuff she had made and it was absolutely amazing to say the least.

Finally I ordered cake pops, cake and cookies from her on snow white theme.

I gave her a few pictures and a few instructions so that she would be free to use her own creativity too. The cake, cake pops and cookies all looked better than the pictures I had given her and the taste was absolutely mouth watering. To top it off her rates are just as good. She didn’t over charge and packed everything with finesse.

It’s hard to believe that she has recently started her business and is just so exceptionally talented . She has been doing various baking and decorating courses to enhance her skills.

This is what she has to say herself, “I am a mother of two daughters (4 and 2) who are crazy about sweets. I am from Pakistan and moved to Singapore couple of years back. I loved baking since I was a student. I actually made my first cake in a pressure cooker:p Looking the shine in my daughters eye as they see the cake gives me push to be more creative and try something different! Over the period, I have experimented with variety of different cakes. I love making decorating cakes with gumpaste, fondant and buttercream. I like the freedom to play with my innovative skills to put the customer’s idea into reality. I am happy to have received very encouraging feedback from my clients so far! My favourite cake so far is the Frozen Castle, which I made for my daughter’s birthday.”

Please visit her Facebook page for more pictures and support her little business to help her nurture her talent.
